Understanding Semen Freezing (Sperm Cryopreservation)

Semen freezing is the process where a man’s sperm is collected, analysed and stored frozen to help him maintain his fertility if he is facing a situation that may jeopardize his future fertility. These sperm samples are then used later for fertility treatments or can be donated to other couples who are facing fertility problems. The process of semen freezing involves the following:

• Screening is done to rule out infections like HIV, hepatitis, syphilis etc.
• Collection or extraction of semen sample
• Laboratory analysis the quantity and quality of sperm
• The viable sperms are frozen and stored

Who should consider freezing semen?

Semen freezing is beneficial for men with the following concerns:

• Advancing age
• Deteriorating sperm quality or quantity
• Medical conditions like cancer
• Undergoing vasectomy
• Sexual orientation problems like transgenders
• High-risk occupations and other occupations that demands a lot of time away from their partners

The sperms are the kind of cells that have high fluidity of the membrane and low water content. Due to this, they are less sensitive to cryopreservation damage and are considered to be as good as fresh sperms for fertilizing an egg. There is no known risk to a baby conceived from cryopreserved sperm. So, if you are planning to start a family at some point, semen freezing offers you the choice of having your own biological baby.
