Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

A miscarriage can be heartbreaking for a couple, and when it occurs multiple times it is like a nightmare on a constant loop. Recurrent pregnancy loss is the involuntary ending of a clinically-recognized pregnancy before 20 weeks, three or more times in succession. The term “clinically-recognized pregnancy” means that the pregnancy has been visualized on ultrasound by a doctor. The risk of further miscarriage is always greater in women who have a history of pregnancy loss.

At Srishti, our team of doctors adopt a multidisciplinary approach to find the cause of recurrent pregnancy loss and correcting it with the most appropriate treatment. Some of the common causes are:

Genetic abnormalities: This can be in the embryo or inherited from parents. IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) along with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is done for analysing the genetic makeup of the embryo to reduce the chances of miscarriage.

Anatomic abnormalities: Abnormalities in the shape and size of the uterus may affect childbearing. Surgical correction of the anatomic abnormalities is done in such cases.

Medical conditions: Untreated/unnoticed medical conditions such as thyroid disease or diabetes; abnormalities of the hormonal and immune system; and other syndromes can increase the risk for miscarriage. Such conditions are detected with relevant tests and medications are given.

Lifestyle and Environmental factors: Smoking, alcohol, drug abuse, obesity and even excessive caffeine may affect pregnancy adversely. We offer habit and diet counselling in such cases.

It is important for you and your partner to seek immediate consultation with an infertility specialist so as the causes of miscarriage can be detected early and treated appropriately.
